Like so many of you, I’ve walked through life feeling unsure, struggling with self-doubt, and at times, feeling isolated. I was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States when I was five. When I finally made friends in my early teens, I was instantly pulled into the whirlwind of peer pressure and self-comparison. For a long time, I thought fitting in meant changing myself, editing parts of who I was just to belong.

But one of the unexpected gifts of being an outsider was that I learned to truly see people. I became the friend everyone confided in, someone people turned to for support and encouragement. My role as a listener gave me purpose, but behind it, I was battling my own struggles. My childhood was filled with self-doubt, and I found myself constantly nitpicking the things I didn’t like about myself. To cope, I created an “imaginary friend” who would encourage me when no one else could. I drew strength from watching Oprah, who, through the TV screen, showed me what it meant to listen, to encourage, and to be present.

My journey has been marked by struggles with mental health, self-acceptance, and understanding my own worth. Years later, after multiple personal battles—including an eventual diagnosis of bipolar disorder—I began to understand that my healing had to come from within. Medication helped, but I realized that no one else could change my perception of myself. Only I could make peace with my insecurities, forgive my past, and commit to becoming someone I could be proud of.

It took years of therapy, personal growth, and an unbreakable commitment to self-care to become the confident, compassionate person I am today. I learned that when I showed up as my true self, without trying to fit into anyone else’s expectations, I became not only happier but magnetic to the right people. This wasn’t just a revelation for my life; it changed how I viewed the dating world.

When I entered the world of online dating, I found myself—like so many others—lost in trying to “stand out” in the way that apps seem to demand: the perfect photo, the witty bio, the “right” interests.
